The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) is an organization that consists of state and federal officials who develop model regulations for animal feeds, including ingredient definitions and labeling guidelines, that are then enforced by the states. AAFCO website
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) maintains a list of animal feeds that have been recalled due to health concerns. The FDA also regulates therapeutic foods for pets.

The American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine is the certifying organization for veterinary nutrition, internal medicine, cardiology, neurology, and oncology specialists. They have information on residencies in various specialties and a directory to find a local specialist. ACVIM website
